Karlaya Tjukurrpa

  • Nancy Nyanyarna Jackson was born near Karrku and now lives in Warakurna with her family. This painting is called Karlaya tjukurrpa (emu dreaming). The emus travelled south to west, ending up in Karrku where they descended into a deep hole. Red ochre rock rubbed off onto their feathers and this is how the emu got its markings. Ngaanyatjarra women still collect ochre from this special site to make medicine which is rubbed into the body to alleviate aches and pains.
