Fungguli is the Ngan’gi word for sugarbag or honey. The artist has depicted the small balls of sugarbag found in a hive.

Ekerre (sugarbag bee) are small black bees which are native to Australia, and are stingless, which is where they get their common name of the Stingless bee. They are much smaller than the European honey bee and their habitats are often stolen by the introduced spices.

Although there are hundreds of species of Australian native bees, the ekerre are the only ones that make and store quantities of fungguli.
