Marrika Gilla
Ku’arlu Mangga (Good Nest)Marika is a proud Nhanda/Wadjarri woman developing her own multi media art practise, celebrating family stories and cultural heritage in the Ku’arlu Mangga art studios.
Marrika is been a long term youth participant in the Ku’arlu Mangga program that connects youth with elders on country, and encourages creative expression in the art studios with Colleen and Mauretta Drage. Marrika was our lead catwalk model in Ecofashion 2018.
Marrika is currently living on Noongar country studying at Marr Mooditj and returns to Ku’arlu Mangga for creative workshops and learning on Country. Her 2021 series of prints expresses the strong emotions from these experiences on Country with senior family members.
Her 2022 prints in the market are development works for her REvealed exhibition works “Goannas Fighting” which have been upscaled to almost a meter long. These works use a complex technique that gives the small works a soft dreamy patina, expressing Marika’s contemporary and quirky take on things, whilst drawing strength from her cultural heritage.
